The content of the article is fine, but I'm not sure if it should be at "Crontab" or "Crontab (Unix command)". You can have the crontab program or a crontab file, and I think an article about the command should be placed in "Crontab (Unix command)" and an article about the format of crontab files at "Crontab". At the moment it'd probably be OK to leave the article about the command here but if someone writes an article about crontab files it may be necessary to move this. -- 188.8.131.52

cron vs crond vs crontab.
I have on my system (ancient Linux-Mandrake 7.2) both /usr/bin/crontab and /usr/sbin/crond. They're both part of the vixie-cron package. I don't know what exactly that means. - crond is the daemon that runs every minute, executing jobs. crontab is a program you can run to edit (crontab -e) or list (crontab -l) cron entries.

I just hit this page on a whim. While I have marginal Unix/Linux experience, I was wondering what 'cron' meant. How did the name come about? Maybe I am expecting too much as I now rely on Wikipedia to answer any trivial question that pops into my head at any given point.

So, the common mistake is explained, what about how to actually accomplish something like running a command on the first sunday in april?

The first cron I knew about was written by Brian Kernighan at Bell Labs. It serviced a single crontab file, /usr/lib/crontab, for root only by reading it every minute to decide if there was anything to do just then. It accumulated a lot of CPU time.
The first multi-user cron was devised and designed by Bob Brown, a graduate student at Purdue University in 1979 and turned into a "new systems assistant project" picked up by Keith Williamson in 1980 who co-implemented the remaining pieces with Brown.
Williamson carried it to Bell Labs two years later after graduating where it became a part of System V, later into BSD. Enhancements were made to it at Bell Labs; the original multiuser cron put crontabs in users' home directories (.crontabs) at at the Labs, they were moved into /usr/spool/crontab.
This version of cron is the one in vendor Unix systems - IBM, HP, Sun, and SGI, for example.
This multiuser cron ran as an event-driven simulation, initially reading in all of the crontab files and building an event queue of them, then peeling them off in real-time, running the commands, and placing them back on the event queue at their next execution time. The cron daemon would periodically check if any of the crontab files had changed and reload them if so, or it would re-read the crontabs if sent a SIGHUP.
The event queue was the Franta-Malay data structure which had recently been evaluated by Brown at the request of Herb Schwetman, a professor. This algorithm consumed far less resources than the original root-only cron. The Franta- Malay event queue is documented in the Communications of the ACM around the same time that this cron was built at Purdue.
Paul Vixie wrote the standard cron on Linux, and it uses the original Kernighan-style polling method to look for work. Various other crons have popped up since.

This information is correct, but has only a little to do with crontab - there needs to be a distinct page for cron. The original (and wretched) five-field time specifier in crontab files has carried through from the original cron even though cron itself has been rewritten several times over. "crontab" as a commend appeared when the Purdue cron went to Bell Labs (and probably written by Keith Williamson) and crontab files moved from $HOME/.crontab to /usr/spool/crontab. Previously, sending SIGHUP to cron sufficed. But, since crontab files were tucked away in a spool directory at the Labs, there had to be a way for users to get the content of their crontab files, hence "crontab -l". Frankly, I liked $HOME/.crontab but it had bad implications on systems where $HOME was a shared directory across several hosts. --Bob 19:43, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

What the hell is CronMaker anyway?

This example doesn't work on my Ubuntu 6.06 LTS. Is that a bug in the wiki or a bug in the crontab (the one which uses \%Y\%m\%d syntax works)?
